Planning a trip to NYC or other metropolitan city? Think of getting a city pass!
It will save you big time on sight seeing! Definitely worth the investment ahead of time.

New York is nothing if not festive.  Whatever the holiday or occasion, there’s some sort of parade, display, show, festival, event,…you name it to celebrate!

So, it being Halloween, and me not a big fan of haunted houses (getting chased by a masked man with a chainsaw? No thank you!), we kicked off the celebration in a new way:  with a visit to Governor’s Island.

The Rise Events, usually in Long Island, featured a Halloween event this year on Governor’s Island called The Night of 1000 Jack-o-Lanterns.  Tickets include a ride from Manhattan to Govonor’s Island and back along with the trail walk through the jack-o-lantern displays.

So, on a dark and spooky October night, a few days shy of Halloween, we headed to Governor’s Island to see what this trail walk was all about!

The ferry ride itself features some beautiful views as well as the views when you first walk onto the island including the skyline, bridges, Statue of Liberty, and the Hudson Bay.

I have to say, someone knows how to pick their locations.  I’ve never been to Governor’s Island, but there were some seriously creepy looking buildings and along with the Halloween music playing, red up lighting, and archways of trees, the tone was set.

And then, there was the trail walk.  It was completely not what I expected at all!  It was truly a trail lined with huge carved pumpkins, but there was some seriously incredible artwork to be seen.  Each pumpkin, according to staff, took artists hours to carve!  Some, 20 or more hours!

The jack-o-lanterns were separated by theme:  some scary, some funny, some for adults, some for kids, some for everyone!

Here were some of the best and there were a lot more!

Scary Movie:

Disney Princess:

Police/Firefighter/Armed Forces

Dia de los Muertos and Skulls

NYC Boroughs:

At the end of the trail there were some eating options:  a few food trucks and a few outdoor sit down spots.

Overall, this was a great night and the perfect way to celebrate Halloween and get in the spirit!  Although tickets are almost sold out for the 2017 season (although I did still see a few more up for grabs the next few nights), keep it in mind for 2018!
