Summer is my favorite season, full of cookouts, ice cold margaritas, and salty aired beach days jumping in and out of the waves and drying off in the hot summer sun!
However, if you are a fellow curly haired girl, I’m sure you can relate to the photo shown above.
If my hair isn’t in a tight braid, then you are literally get an up close and personal look at every product it takes to tame my frizzy curls in the humid summer heat!
Up until I was about 11, I had the most beautiful pin straight, chocolate brown hair, but somewhere around 12 a change happened, specifically, to my hair.
That once silky straight hair coiled up, frizzed out, and slowly became the mane that it is today.
As surprising as it was, 20 years later, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
(Don’t mind the ends, I haven’t had my hair cut in awhile…)
After two decades of trial and error (and error and error and error), I’m happy to share the products that I have found make my hair look it’s best and the tricks to using them!
(Listed in order from the left to the right as in the photo shown above.)
Product: Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Leave in Conditioner
How: Right after showering on wet hair (I use almost a whole palm full!). Put a healthy amount in your palm and use your fingers to comb through your hair. I use this every. Single. Time I shower and wash my hair. Follow up with brushing with your hairbrush while your hair is wet. (And for the love of God, never brush dry, curly hair!)
Why: My hair gets so incredibly knotted and frizzy. I’ve found that whatever style I’m going for, this is the one product I can’t go without. It helps to smooth the frizz and separate curls.
Product: Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine Moroccan Sleek Oil Treatment
How: Either mix with the leave in conditioner or put in after while your hair is still wet. Use a small amount and avoid your roots (it can make your roots look a little greasy). Focus on the ends and the hair a few inches away from your scalp. Comb through your hair and follow up with a brush.
Why: You don’t need to use this everyday, but maybe 2-3 times per week depending on how dry your hair is. It’s especially good if you are hitting the gym frequently and washing your hair daily. It can help restore dry hair and bring back some necessary oil and shine!
Product: Smooth’n Shine Polishing Curl Activating Mousse with Jojoba Oil
How: While hair is wet, after it has been brushed, apply a palm full of mousse to two inch sections of hair at a time and scrunch (you’ll probably end up with about 6-8 sections). Be sure the mousse is dispersed from root to ends!
Why: The mousse is key. It holds the curls together so that it actually looks like curls and not just wild frizz. This particular mousse is a new product I recently began using. I like this product because the oil helps to not dry out your hair!
Product: TRESemme extra hold hair gel (4)
How: This is to use in place of the mousse. Use it the same way, apply to sections of wet hair from root to ends and scrunching as you go.
Why: I like the gel. It’s a little heavier than mousse, but has a similar effect: curl control.
Product: Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco Weightless healing dry oil
How: This is a great product to use on damp or dry hair (Not sure if that’s how it says to use it, but that’s what I do!). Just give a light spritz over your hair (maybe 5-6 throughout) and scrunch.
Why: On those hot, extra frizzy days, this really helps to tame and add extra shine!
Product: Garnier Fructis Style Curl Renew Reactivating Spray
How: This is great to freshen up curls after your hair has been dry for a few hours or even on next day curls when you skip the wash. Just spritz all over and, as usual, scrunch away!
Why: This can add a lot of nice boost and body to curls in danger of flattening out due to a long day, bun damage, or resting on your pillow all night. This has quickly become one of my favorite and go-to curly hair products!
I hope these tips and tricks help! All of these products can most likely be found at your local drug store (I’ve picked mine up along the way at various CVS’s in NY and RI).
I’d love to hear about any success stories you have with these products, great products of your own, or funny curly hair stories you are willing to share!
